4 Must Have Bridal Session Tips

Wedding Planning

A blog about what a bridal session is and tips for having one.

A bridal session is a portrait session that takes place during the weeks leading up to your wedding. It’s a fun, creative way to capture beautiful images of you in your wedding dress, and it allows you to get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day.

Bridal sessions are also a chance for the bride to get beautiful portraits of herself, and some non traditional wedding images. Bridal sessions are fun and can help you feel more confident about being photographed on your wedding day.

A successful bridal shoot does not happen by chance. Here are some tips to consider before your bridal photo shoot.

Bridal sessions are the perfect way to test out your wedding day look.

Bridal sessions are a good time to try out how you want things to look on your wedding day. A bridal session is the perfect opportunity for your hair and makeup trial. Your bridal session is a time to play with hair and makeup before the big day. Try out a new hairdo, or have a trial run with that new lipstick color you bought recently.

Ying scheduled an appointment with the same hair and makeup artists she’s hired for her wedding day for a trial run.

Make sure to schedule your bridal session at least a month before the wedding.

Ideally, your bridal session should be scheduled for the same time of year as your wedding. If you are getting married in the summer, schedule your bridal session in the summer. This will help you see how your wedding dress will look with that time of year’s weather and lighting.

Ying scheduled her bridal session in April just three weeks before her wedding day.

Choose a location that means something to you.

Pick a location that is special to you. The bridal session could take place at your wedding venue, an old house that belonged to someone in your family, a park you like to visit on date nights, or somewhere else that means something to you.

Ying loved her wedding venue and we decided it was the perfect location to capture her bridal portraits.

Bring your accessories.

This includes everything from your veil or hairpiece to your earrings, jewelry, shoes, and garter. You will need the following items:

  • Your wedding dress
  • Your wedding shoes (and any other shoes you’d like!)

  • Jewelry. Bring along any family heirlooms (jewelry, veils, etc.) that you plan to wear for the big day!
  • A bouquet. Use a real bouquet.

Ying had two dresses/bridal looks on her wedding day and we decided to photograph them both at her session.
