Engagement season is upon us and I wanted to take some time to help you plan with a helpful guide to engagement session planning. Engagement sessions are a unique opportunity to showcase the love you share and capture the beauty of your relationship. As an Austin wedding photographer, the engagement session offers us a moment to connect with our couples before their wedding day. Our couples get chance to practice in front of the camera, and to share the intimacy of being photographed together before the wedding. The engagement session helps you feel more comfortable on your big day.
Keep in mind when planning your session that these sessions are personal. Take a minute to reflect upon what feels authentic to the two of you. Be open to ideas, reflect on your relationship, and we’ll create something magical together. There is a lot to consider when planning your engagement session. Below is my best advice and guide to engagement session planning.
Choose your location thoughtfully. Think about places that are unique and special to the two of you, somewhere that has special meaning to your relationship. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. We love new locations and are happy to wanderlust with you to a unique location off the beaten path. Consider choosing a place that tells a story about your relationship. Or perhaps, a location with breathtaking landscape or dramatic architecture.
In my opinion, this is one of the most important aspects of the engagement session. Wardrobe choice is everything! Clothing choices say a lot about who you are and showcase your personalities. I recommend two coordinated outfit options ranging from refined casual to classic chic. Also, pair the outfit to the location! Your outfits are your choice and should be a reflection of you!
To use props or not is always a question. Choose props carefully and use them if they make sense; otherwise they can come across as gimmicky. Choose props appropriate for the location.
When it comes to hair and makeup, it’s just as important as your clothing choices. The engagement session is an excellent opportunity to have a trial run with the makeup artist for your wedding day. It’s a great opportunity to see how their work photographs and if any adjustments need to be made. But, don’t overdo it! You are going for a more polished version of yourself!
I hope you found this guide to engagement session planning helpful! Curious to know about all the ways you can put your engagement photos to good use?
