5 Tips for Finding the Right Newborn Photographer

I get it, finding the right photographer for you is much like finding a great fitting pair of jeans. If you are anything like me, that’s not an easy task! There are so many options based on location, style, experience, personality, convenience, specialty, and even cost. So, how do you find the right match to fit your needs?

I’ve got 5 tips for finding the right newborn photographer for you!

Tip 1: Getting to know the Photographer.

I recommend beginning by checking out the bio page of the photographer’s website. This is where you will get a glimpse into the photographer’s personality. Do you get a sense of who they are? Do you feel a connection?

Tip 2: Experience.

How much experience does the photographer have? And, how did they obtain their expertise? For me, it was essential to focus on what I love to capture and sharpen my skills in that specific genre. I can’t get enough of the miracle of those sweet squishy newborns that smell like heaven on earth.  Long before I was a newborn photographer, I was a Labor and Delivery nurse. This experience gave me years of practice on safe handling of a newborn. To date, I have handled hundreds of newborns. Once, I decided to become a newborn photographer; I mentored with some of the most talented photographers in the business to refine my craft and safety practices.

Tip 3: Style.

What style of newborn photography are you drawn too? Do you like soft, light and airy photos with most of the focus on your baby? Do you love lots of colors? Do you prefer a photographer who uses lots of props? My style of newborn photography is soft and organic, with neutral tones and pale color palates void of props to keep your baby the focus of attention.

Tip 4: What do they offer?

Will you spend hours looking for the perfect accessories?

I prefer to take all that work out of your hands. You’re tired, and you’re pregnant, you have enough to think about with your new arrival on the way. Or better yet, you’ve just delivered, and you want nothing more than someone to let you get three uninterrupted hours of sleep. My studio is stocked with a beautiful assortment of wraps, blankets, hats, and headbands. You will have full access to all of this. I have everything you need to get those gorgeous images. All you have to do is show up, chill out on my comfy couch, and I will handle the rest! Ahhh…now doesn’t that sound awesome?!

Tip 5: Schedule Your Session Early.

Once you’ve decided on the perfect newborn photographer to capture your darling baby, contact the photographer and schedule your session BEFORE your baby arrives. Many newborn photographer’s book months in advance. This will ensure you get a date on the photographer’s schedule. I typically book newborn session 4-6 weeks in advance.
