This feature is made even sweeter knowing that February is Heart Health Month.

I don’t know a better spokesperson for cardiac awareness than this little girl and her family.

I’ve had the honor to photograph A’Vayah since she was three months old.

She came into the world 6 weeks premature and was born with a rare and complex congenital heart defect.

In a period of three years sh’es undergone three major heart surgeries. She’s overcome feeding issues and trouble with her eyes.

At some point this ray of light will need a heart transplant.

Despite all of these obstacles, A’Vayah is full of light and spirit. It’s been a privilege to know her and her beautiful family.
